In Revelation chapter 11 we encounter a sobering prophecy. Two witnesses, empowered by God, will boldly proclaim truth in a world drowning in rebellion. For three and a half years they will testify with power, calling the nations to repentance. But their ministry ends in a shocking event: they are killed, and the world erupts in celebration.
Revelation 11:10 says, “And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.” Imagine it—an international holiday dedicated to the silencing of God’s voice.
Do we not already see shadows of this spirit in our day?
The Witnesses and Their Mission
The 2 witnesses in revelation 11 are prophetic voices chosen and empowered by God. Scripture does not name them, though many have speculated. What matters is their mission: to testify to the truth, to expose sin, and to warn of judgment. They are a divine alarm clock, shaking a slumbering world awake.
But the world, comfortable in its sin, doesn’t want to be awakened. As Yahoshua said in John 3:19, “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” This hatred culminates in their murder. Revelation 11:7 declares, “When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.”
Parallels in Our Culture Today
Today, in 2025, hostility toward biblical truth is no longer hidden. While in some nations persecution means imprisonment, torture, or even death, in others it takes the form of censorship, slander, and mockery.
- Believers mocked in tragedy: When a Christian leader dies suddenly, social media is filled with cruel comments rather than compassion. The world revels in their downfall.
- Cheering sections online: When truth-tellers are censored or silenced, mobs celebrate, convinced they’ve rid themselves of a “tormentor.”
- Laws applauded: When governments redefine marriage, muzzle preachers, or restrict religious freedom, crowds celebrate the rebellion as progress.
According to Open Doors, more than 360 million Christians worldwide suffer persecution today. This is not mere disagreement—it is the active suppression of the gospel and, in many cases, open hatred of Christ.
The Spirit of Antichrist at Work
This global hatred is not random. It is driven by the same spirit that will rejoice when the Two Witnesses are killed. 1 John 2:22 warns, “Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.”
The celebrations we see when Christian voices are silenced are not neutral reactions—they are open rebellion against God. Psalm 2:2–3 describes this perfectly: “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.’”
The world wants freedom from God’s authority. The spirit of antichrist promises it. But it ends only in judgment.
God’s Vindication
The story doesn’t end with the world’s celebration. Revelation 11:11–12 declares, “Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, ‘Come up here.’ And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them.”
The world may celebrate for a moment, but God has the final word. The resurrection of the Two Witnesses points us to the hope of every believer: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55).
Application for Today’s Believer
So what does this mean for us now?
- Don’t be shocked when the world mocks or hates you. Yahoshua warned in John 15:18, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”
- Stay faithful in witness, even when it costs you. We are not called to be popular, but to be faithful.
- Remember God’s vindication. Romans 8:18 assures us, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Conclusion – A Call to Stand Firm
Will you stand boldly, even if the world someday celebrates your silence? Our task is not to win applause but to bear witness to Christ. The early church understood this well. Tertullian famously said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
The same Spirit that raised the Two Witnesses dwells in us. Let us stand firm, emboldened by the Spirit of God, knowing that our labor is not in vain in the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58).
The world may celebrate for a moment, but eternity belongs to those who are faithful to Christ.
