When Scripture warns, “by your sorceries all the nations were deceived” (Revelation 18:23), it isn’t describing fairy tales. The Greek word there is pharmakeia (φαρμακεία). And it’s not hard to see how it’s working right now.

Abortion is celebrated as healthcare. Transgender confusion is paraded as compassion. Pills and vaccines are sold as salvation while leaving scars and sorrow in their wake. And the church — far too often — stays silent, or even cheers along.

Romans chapter one says that when people reject truth, God gives them over to a debased mind. Second Thessalonians chapter two warns He sends strong delusion so they’ll believe the lie. That’s not a future warning — that’s happening today.

The Biblical Roots of Pharmakeia

The word pharmakeia appears in Galatians 5:20, Revelation 9:21, and Revelation 18:23. Every time, it’s translated as sorcery or witchcraft, and every time it’s condemned. While in classical Greek pharmakon could mean a remedy or drug, in Scripture pharmakeia always refers to deception through drugs, potions, or occult practices.

Early church sources confirm this. In the Roman world, drugs were used not only for healing but for charms, spells, and even abortion. Hippolytus, a third-century church father, rebuked women who used pharmakeia to “extinguish” life in the womb. In both Old and New Testaments, sorcery and drug-based occultism are consistently condemned (Exodus 22:18; Deuteronomy 18:10).

Modern Pharmakeia: Abortion, Transgenderism, and Over-Medication

Today, pharmakeia takes different forms but the spirit is the same: manipulation, deception, and destruction disguised as healing.

  • Abortion as Healthcare: The Guttmacher Institute reports over 1 million abortions in 2024, a rise from 2023 despite new restrictions. Telehealth abortions — pills delivered by mail — now account for nearly 1 in 5 procedures. Technology has made the destruction of life easier and more hidden, but no less evil. Revelation’s warning fits perfectly: pharmakeia was used for abortion then, and it still is today.
  • Transgenderism and Hormonal Manipulation: Hormone treatments and surgeries are presented as “care,” especially for children, but they mutilate healthy bodies and create lifelong dependence on the pharmaceutical system. Pew Research shows public pushback is growing — most Americans oppose gender transition for minors — but the cultural machine keeps pushing the lie. This is pharmakeia at work: altering the body under the guise of compassion.
  • Pills as Panaceas: From SSRIs to endless anxiety meds, society treats pills as a fix-all. While some treatments have limited medical value, the bigger deception is spiritual: teaching people to trust chemicals instead of Christ. It’s not healing, it’s numbing — and it keeps people dependent.

The Spiritual Mechanism: Debased Minds and Strong Delusion

Romans 1 shows the downward spiral of a society that rejects God: first, He gives them up to lusts; then to vile passions; finally, to a debased mind. Paul says plainly — they not only commit evil, they celebrate it.

Second Thessalonians 2 describes the same reality: when truth is rejected, God Himself sends “strong delusion” so people believe the lie. That’s why arguments alone can’t break through. This is spiritual blindness — and it’s judgment.

When people say, “God told me to take this pill” or “God created these drugs,” they’re not hearing from the Lord. James 1:17 says every good and perfect gift comes from above. God does not author harm. Attributing pharmakeia to Him is itself a delusion.

The Church’s Response

Tragically, much of the church has chosen silence or compromise. But Scripture calls us to stand. We must expose the works of darkness, proclaim the truth of God’s Word, and refuse to affirm the lies of pharmakeia.

Silence is approval. Approval is participation. And participation invites judgment.
